The Reflective Surfaces Relentless Truth - The Art Of Jonathan Rodriguez Jonathan Rodriguez was born in 1983 in Tampa Bay, Florida and grew up in the suburbs of Hillsborough County, obsessing over movies from various genres and visiting commercialized theme parks in the Orlando area. Growing up, Jonathan admired classic Walt Disney cartoons and his wide variety of character architypes that would later on influence his body of work. His Illustrations reflect on his own experience, where he uses them to conceptualize and express the collective consciousness that intertwines us all. These works are best described as a social commentary as seen through the eyes of a child's innocence. Each character and their situation that is created gives Jonathan an oppurtunity to see himself and others in a different light. "My goal is to influence the viewer to not just be an observer, but a participater as well, seeing themselves and their experiences in a new perspective." The combination of graphite, oils, soft pastels, colored pencils, and acylics helps compliment Jonathan's unique point of view. Creative influences include Edward Gorey, Dr. Suess, Tim Burton, Walt Disney, Maurice Sendak, Jim Henson, George Lucas, Joseph Campbell as well as spiritual and philosophical writers like Eckhart Tolle, Neale Donald Walsch, James Redfield, Don Miguel Ruiz, and Carl Jung. His work has been displayed alongside local artists at Mirta's Gallery, The Shimberg Playhouse and Bombshell Gallery. He also has had a solo exhibition at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center and was in the South Tampa News where he was interviewed for being one of the fourty artists in the Bad Art For Bad People show in July 2006. He currently lives in Sarasota, Florida where he is attending Ringling School of Art and Design, majoring in Graphic and Interactive Communication. In the future, Jonathan hopes to write and Illustrate a children's book of original stories and plans on having numerous shows in the Tampa Bay area and abroad.
